Money should fund students, not buildings
Tuesday, March 24th, 2009DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE – I’ve been a student at the U on and off since way back before the Marriott Library became a real gem of modern campus architecture, all glass and light and space. The new Grand Reading Room surely has one of the most beautiful views of any reading room anywhere. That building used to be more or less the exact opposite, dark and dreary and dank, even on the higher floors.
Universe Project will affect campus parking
Thursday, March 5th, 2009THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE – The Universe Project, which proposes to transform the west parking lot of the football stadium into a housing, retail, office space and parking development, began three years ago as an urban planning class project, said Brenda Scheer, dean of the College of Architecture and Planning.
“A lot of students commute,” she said. “So students designed a place with transit-oriented development.”
The project idea passed to an architecture class and then to a graduate student.
“The project came from students making changes to have a college town, missing what they don’t have here,” Scheer said.

Monday, December 1st, 2008DESERET MORNING NEWS – The University of Utah is reeling after the death of Craig Forster, director of the U.’s Office of Sustainability, who died Friday after a hiking accident in Zion National Park.
Forster, 55, was hiking with friends in Zion Nation Park during a holiday weekend outing. While walking along an unnamed canyon trail near state Route 9, Forster lost his footing and fell nearly 20 feet, landing mainly on his head, according to a statement released by park officials.
Forster was a professor in the architecture and planning department and the director of the Office of Sustainability, a budding office at the university that was created at the encouragement of students on campus.

“The call (is) for innovators, future thinkers and interdisciplinary explorers,” said Jim Agutter, a research assistant professor for the College of Architecture and Planning.

Prof urges restoration over new construction
Friday, November 7th, 2008THE DAILY UTAH CHRONICLE – When it comes to recycling, U architecture professor Robert Young has a bigger and better idea than aluminum cans and newspapers—recycling buildings.
In his latest book, Historic Preservation Technology, Young discusses the negative effects of extracting new resources to build large buildings and new developments. Restoring historic buildings and investing in older developments will save materials and energy, provide economic advantages and preserve natural areas untouched by developers.
